Femoral hernia is a less common type of groin hernia that develops alongside the main blood vessels that travel from the abdomen to the leg. They are commoner in women. The hernia may contain part of the intestine (bowel) or abdominal fatty tissue. They are at particular risk of becoming stuck (irreducible) or strangulated (cut off their blood supply). An irreducible hernia containing bowel can cause bowel obstruction (blockage). For these reasons surgical repair is recommended.
