Mr Mohammad Abu Hilal MD, FRCS

Professional profile:

Mr Hilal is a Consultant General Surgeon specialising in surgery of the liver, gall bladder, bile ducts and pancreas. He has helped develop keyhole pancreatic surgery in Southampton and he is one of the leading Surgeons in keyhole liver and pancreatic surgery in the UK.

Mr Hilal completed his medical studies at the University of Brescia in Italy. He did his first surgical training at the University Hospital in Verona, where the Hepato-biliary pancreatic Unit is considered one of biggest liver and pancreatic Units in Europe. He moved to the UK in 2002 and completed a further four years of specialist training in Southampton and St James's University Hospital in Leeds. He is a consultant Hepato-biliary pancreatic surgeon and Honorary senior lecturer at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust (SUHT) where he accepted a Consultant position in 2006.

Mr Hilal has worked at Spire Southampton since 2006 where he performs major open and keyhole liver and pancreatic resections. He also performs a large number of gallbladder, biliary, hernia and other general surgical procedures.

Research interests:

Mr Abu Hilal has a strong academic interest and he leads the clinical research activity in the Liver and Pancreatic Unit in Southampton. His main interest is keyhole liver and pancreatic surgery on which he is published extensively. He has a group of research fellows and his research activity is translated into a large number of important scientific publications in peer review journals, presentations, book chapters, invitation as international guest speaker to different conferences, initiation of different research prospective studies and RCTs, external examiner of scientific thesis's in national and international centres. He established and developed the first training course for keyhole liver and pancreatic surgery where he continues to train a large number of liver and pancreatic surgeons in the UK and Europe.

Personal profile:

Mr Hilal is married to Mona and has 2 children. After a long day of work he regularly goes to the Gym and likes swimming and running. During the weekends he enjoys going for long walks in Southampton and surrounding areas.
