The colon is the part of the large intestine (bowel) which extends from the caecum to the rectum. It's principle role is to extract water and salt from the stool. It is divided into six parts: The caecum sits in the right lower part of the abdomen and is where the small intestine joins the colon and the appendix sits. Above this is the ascending colon, then the hepatic flexure by the liver where the colon turns sharply to cross the abdomen as the transverse colon. At another sharp turn on the left side by the spleen, the splenic flexure, the colon travels down as the descending then sigmoid colon before entering the rectum.
